Motivating software developers

Author

Bjørn Erik Haug

Description

As the title states, this article is about how to motivate software developers. I would tend to agree with the majority of it. One thing I might add is "Give the developer a sense of empowerment". What do I mean by that?

If a developer/group of developers is able to intelligently defend a reason for not putting a feature into place, allow him/them to say "no" to that feature. It would take some getting used to by the portion of your company that makes feature requests, but in the end, it would give the developer(s) more pride in their work and a greater sense of "ownership".

Favorite Quote(s):

"Being allowed to finish one piece of functionality before starting something new is a good way to achieve quality. By letting me focus on one thing at a time, and by demanding that it must be both tested and documented before I can call it complete, I can make something that I can take pride in."

--- SORRY FOR POSTING THIS AS A COMMENT - THE "CONTACT TOD" EMAIL FORM CAME BACK WITH A 500 ERROR ---

Hi Tod! As everyone knows, a software developer who leaves a company is entitled to answer a few questions by his former coworkers. (Okay, I made that up, but I think it sounds good!) My question is about the ADF_ErrorPublisher that you were using in Results. I've been trying to use it in Vertice, as the existing publisher had a problem with the push to .Net 2.0 (I won't bore you with the details). I've tried adding the other publisher, but I'm not getting the emails when an exception occurs. I'm GUESSING that to use the publisher, I need to use the ErrorHandlerLabel on all Vertice pages, as that's how things look in Results. Does this sound right to you?

Okay, that's all. Hope you don't mind me asking, and that your new job is going well. In-N-Out just won't be the same without you! :-)

Blessings,
Chris V.

Never mind - I figured out another way to do things. :-)

Have a good day.
